Music Production Schools / Recording and Engineering Careers

Getting a career in music

It used to be that you had to go to a very liberal university or an art school to find a decent music production program. Now it seems that they are popping up everywhere. No surprise due to the fact that the average American spends more time and money on entertainment than they do on food and shelter combined.

Choosing a music production school: So, the question for prospective students is not where can I find good music production schools. It is who is going to provide an education that the industry will take seriously. The entertainment industry has always been fickle. That hasn't changed.The old school saying "it's not what you know, but who you know" has been proven in the entertainment industry more than any other. So, if you take that as a rule, the reputation of the music production school will play an enormous factor in your marketability.

A lot of music production schools offer basic audio production programs. Community colleges have even jumped on the bandwagon. Does this mean that they are all going to get you a job? Sure. There is no doubt that you can get into the field with minimal training at a music production school without any reputation or accreditation from the industry. Are they jobs worth taking? Probably not. Most people that yearn for a career in audio are not going to be satisfied with a career as a sound tech or a live mixer at the local venue that changes names and owners as often as kegs of beer. Some people are. If you dream of a career working with estabished artists, studios, or production houses you need to plan carefully.

Chelsea, the best place to go to that I know is ODU if you want a four year degree. The major is called Music Business and Production, and I've looked all over the US and can't find any school that's ACCREDITED and offers the same rigorous classes that they do.

I graduated from the Conservatory of Recording Arts & Sciences and I have to say it was the best experience and investment of my life. Not only did I get a great education, but unlike some other schools, I learned on amazing gear that you actually WILL see in the industry. I see it every day at work! The comment that the guy from Full Sail said is absolutely true: "Keep you focus on what you want to do, but be prepared to bust your butt to get any audio job." But I have to disagree with the part about studio gigs going to family members and friends. Though true to some extent, this business is about who you know AND what you know. The Conservatory did a fantastic job of opening doors for me at places that I wouldn't have been able to get into on my own. They make you do an internship as a requirement to graduate, and I got to pick where I went! From there is was up to me to prove that I had the skills necessary to land the gig. Although no school can guarantee a job after graduation, I have to say that these guys worked their ass off to make sure I got connected, and an opportunity to prove myself. It paid off big time for me and lots of other guys in my class. If you want a great hands-on education AND someone to help you get into the industry to get a gig, I think your money is best spent at CRAS!! Just two cents from a very happy graduate!

For all interested in persuing a career in the audio industry, I highly recommend Full Sail. I went there and graduated for Recording Arts. I got a great overview of all types of jobs in the audio industry. The equipment you get to use is so awesome, you may never see it anywhere else again. Great teachers and connections. I think it is the most important to keep an open mind after graduating. Keep you focus on what you want to do, but be prepared to bust your butt to get any audio job. The studio work is few and far between. The people who mainly get those jobs already know someone or have a family member in the industry. With hard work, you can buy your own equipment, gradually, and use what you've learned to enjoy makng music on your own terms. All in all, keep an open mind, and get a audio related job that you like doing. Don't bank on that Sony dream job right away. Most of all, get the best eduaction you can afford and make the most of every topic studied. You never know what you'll need to recall later in the industry. You can't go wrong with Full Sail in my opinion.

Music Is My Life

When I wake up music is the first thing on my mind. When I go to sleep its the last thought I have before I go to sleep. I'm interested in making and producing good quality music for the people. Don't go to SAE whatever you do

Hey,
whatever you do, don't go to SAE!! They are the worst school ever. I had a really bad experience with them. Their teachers aren't very good and they have strange rules like they lock the doors and won't let you in if you are running late. If you forget your ID, they kick you off campus. I tried to withdraw only after one lesson because I was so disappointed and they charged me another huge fee!

Glad to read about the various options one has to learn about being an engineer. If I had all the money in the world I would try to get into Full Sail or Los Angeles Recording. But since I don't, I'll check out Recording Connection and another company, GetAMentor.org, instead. From what I read about their companies, they hook you up with a studio in your hometown.

What school in North Carolina have these type of classes?

I live in Knightdale, North Carolina..an I'm taking a year off to get my money right and figure out what i really want to do in college..an going to an audio school would be one of the main things..im a music artist myself..i've signed a contract to Raw Skillz Entertainment..An i feel this would put me a notch ahead of the game learning all the basic skills in audio recording..but if you could..please..tell me the schools around raleigh and/or close that have such programs..

I am also lookin at schools in toronto for audio engineering. T.A.R.A. (the audio recording acadmey) seems the most practical, however, they are not an accredited school. I have spoken to others in the industry, apparently you have to be prepared to start from nothing if you even manage to get a job.
I read The Truth's comment and am slowly becoming more and more discouraged.

I have been looking at multiple different colleges, from music production schools to 4 year universities with a music production degree.

I do not know whether to go to a m.s. school or 4 year university. And if I do decided to go to a m.s. school, which one is the best to go to? They are not cheap, so i want to pick the best one possible, and one with a more promising job placement when it's all said and done.

A Complete Con Basically

Be warned people. If you are seriously thinking about a career in recording and mixing music you got to face the facts. Why so many schools, more than ever yet studios have be closing consistently. Well it is simple this is the reaction of the professionals who can't get the work they used to. They are now teaching the craft with no jobs to fill after. It is disgusting misleading and heartbreaking for those that seriously want this and even those with real skills who get spat out with a qualification and no work. 1000's of people now qualify every year to fill what ? The work has dried up so much because of the lack of budgets from Record Labels that it is very slim that anyone will find work in studios. Train in Post-Production for DVD etc that is where the work is and that is still so highly competitive you better get used to no replies from phone calls or e-mails. Its really sad but true. So be warned its tougher than its ever been in Music Production most people involved with work are so guarded as they fear loosing their job that they had to fight for.

Music Production Schools - Which one is the best?

I have been considering going to CRAS lately, the Conservatory of Recording Arts and Science. It is much much cheaper than Full Sail, but am not sure if it is as good of a program.

Full Sail seems to have a pretty good reputation, and the Alumni is definitely more impressive. I live in Georgia so Full Sail would keep me closer to my family which is a good thing, but I hear that Tempe, AZ is a really nice town. I am getting a bit tired of the weather down here anyway.

So, I am looking for some advice on which school is better. I don't mind going into debt for Full Sail if it is really worth it, but since the semesters are so short either school is going to require me to get a student plus loan with my parents co-signing.

The other cool thing about CRAS is that they really only focus on audio and music production, where Full Sail offers so many other programs, I would expect a school just focusing on audio production to maybe know what exactly was going on. But, I guess that doesn't really matter.
